Teaching Plan
Time for Dreams, A
Goals
Sing a ballad.
Sing and move to a song with a two-part form (AB).
Materials
Paper of different colors
Basket of colorful scarves
Triangles and finger cymbals
Two cards: one with a large letter A and one with a large letter B
Instructions
As you listen to the song, distribute colorful paper. Write down one thing that you dream to be or do one day. On the phrase This is a time for dreams, put your paper in a large basket and take one colorful scarf. Sit in a large circle with your scarf to listen to the rest of the song.
Read some of the dreams placed in the basket. Are there any similarities? Are the dreams mostly positive or negative?
Discuss some of the positive lyrics in this song. (Examples: love each other, time for hoping, live in harmony, etc. )
How many sections do you think the song has? (two)
Where does one section end and the next one begin? (A new section begins with the lyrics This is a time for dreams... )
Why do you think it is a new section? (The melody changes and the rhythm is different. The words/lyrics talk about the song's title.)
The opening part of the music is called the A section. The contrasting music is called B. In music, we call this binary form.
Hold up the large letter A: For the first part of the song, stand in a circle, holding a colorful scarf between each person.
As you listen to the song, slowly follow the leader to create a large spiral. Stop on the word harmony. (2nd verse: old) Switch direction to slowly un-spiral until you are standing in a circle again on the word possibility. (2nd verse: heart)
Hold up the large letter B: For the next part of the song, pass the scarves around the circle to the steady beat of the song. Choose a small group to keep the steady beat with triangles and finger cymbals.
Repeat the A and B activities for the rest of the song. Choose a new group to play instruments. On the final phrases, to dream, return the scarves to the basket by calling out colors to toss in: "Time for rainbows and falling stars."
Challenge students to share their written dreams with others, if desired. Display in a rainbow pattern on a door or wall to inspire others.
