Listen to the song "High School Musical." While you are listening,
Keep the steady beat while clapping this rhythm: Rest Ta Rest Ta. (Display on a rhythm card.)
For the last chorus, add a stomp, stomp, clap pattern: Ta Ta Ta Rest. (Display on a rhythm card.)
Count how many times they sing the words "High School Musical." (9)
Practice the vocal parts until you can sing them with confidence. Divide the song into sections if necessary to learn it. Allow everyone the opportunity to sing the various solos and duets.
Composition Challenge
Challenge yourself to write down three goals to accomplish in high school.
Apply a rhythm to each goal. Select simple rhythms that use Ta, Ti-Ti, Rest or create more complicated rhythms, as you are able. For example, "I hope to get good grades" could be Ta Ti-Ti Ti-Ti Ta. Write your rhythm on a rhythm card.
Perform your rhythms for each other. Try playing rhythms from others.
Choose your favorite rhythm to perform as a rhythmic ostinato during the chorus of the song. Choose an instrument to play the rhythm.
Perform the song together. Add solos, duets, and rhythmic ostinati.
