Sing a song with a group and as a solo
Percussion classroom instruments: drums, tambourines and rhythm sticks
Begin with a brief discussion about making new friends and working together. Invite students to find one person with something in common, introduce themselves and find out three facts about that person. Then discuss what they learned.
Listen to the song. Find lyrics about why it is important to work together. (ev'ryone is special in their own way, we make each other strong, we're diff'rent in a good way)
A syncopated rhythm is one that has accents where you don't expect them (off the beat or between the beats). These rhythms are usually written with tied notes. Ask students to find examples of tied notes in the score. (together, on, there)
Model the reading of the song's Chorus We're ALL in THIS to-GE-ther putting a heavy accent on the BOLD words. Play the song again and point out how the capitalized words in the chant are accented in the music.
Write the Rhythm Pattern Chant on the board. Ask the class to echo as you read Part 1, accenting the BOLD words, then do the same for Part 2. Begin slowly and then accelerate to the song tempo. RHYTHM PATTERN CHANT (2 parts):
1. we're ALL in THIS to- GE - ther 2. a SYN- co- PA- ted RHY-thm
1. once we KNOW that we ARE, 2. off the BEAT makes your FEET
1. we're all STARS and we see that 2. want to STOMP and then tip - toe
Students may stand with a partner and do the 2-part Chant together. First, speak the words and then sing them with the music.
Add body percussion to the Chant: SAY Pat just your left thigh on the lower-case words and pat BOTH thighs on the BOLD words.
Add drums and tambourines to the BOLD words of the Chant.
Perform the song by adding four soloists and a steady beat rhythm stick accompaniment, in addition to the drums and tambourines on the syncopated (bold word) rhythms.
