Play "We Know the Way" as students listen and keep a beat on their lap.
Teach or review the concept of syncopation. Have students echo you as you say the words of the refrain in rhythm. Where there is a rest on the downbeat stomp your foot and say the word "rest." Once students are able to echo you correctly, take out the word "rest" and then take out the stomp.
Sing through the refrain of the song having students pay close attention to the syncopated rhythm.
Teach or review form by listening to the song again and analyzing the structure. Have students identify the refrain, the verse and the coda of the song. Now that students are comfortable with the refrain, teach the verse
and the coda. Explain that the last part of the coda is in a language that is native to one of the composers of the song, Opetaia Foa'i. He is from the Polynesian island of Samoa and the language is Samoan.
Once students are comfortable have them perform "We Know the Way".
