Instructions

This song was written by Somali-Canadian artist K'naan for Somalia and its aspirations for freedom. In 2010, the song was played as the official soccer FIFA World Cup anthem. It has now become an international hit and has inspired many people with its words of hope. (Distribute world flags.) As you listen to this song, stand up and wave your flag when you hear the phrase When I get older, I will be stronger. They'll call me freedom just like a waving flag.
- The rhythm of this phrase uses eighth notes and quarter notes in an uneven or syncopated feel: Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta. This pattern is performed four times. Speak the rhythm together. Clap the rhythm.
Introduction: The introduction of this song uses a drum line of three separate parts, then a short melody of oh is layered on top. Learn each part, then choose a part to play. To practice, distribute plastic cups. Turn your cup over to use as a small drum.
- Play the constant marching of triplets by alternating your fingertips quickly on the cup.
- Play the steady beat of quarter notes on your cup.
- At the same time the quarter notes are played, there is a dotted rhythm playing: Tum Ti Ta Ta. To help you, think of the phrase World (dotted quarter note) Cup (eighth note) Soc-cer (two quarter notes). Repeat this rhythm on your cup..
- Practice each part with the music several times, then choose your favorite part to play for the introduction.
Sing the following words to the song. Notice that many of the words begin after a quick rest. Snap on this rest before singing.
