Colored tempo index cards (Presto, Largo, Moderato) to all
Instructions
Introduce a variety of metronomes, such as a mechanical (pendulum style) metronome, digital metronome, or a metronome app. Explain that metronomes help you to keep the steady beat in any tempo. Tempo is the speed of the beat.
Set the metronome at a slow tempo. Explore various slow tempi, such as Adagio, Largo, Lento and Grave. Walk or crawl to these slow, steady beats.
Set the metronome to a fast tempo. Explore various fast tempi, such as Allegro, Presto and Prestissimo. Jog or wiggle to these fast, steady beats.
Echo-sing each melody in the song: "Presto is Fast," "Largo is Slow" and "Moderato." When comfortable with the lyrics, sing with the recording.
Distribute tempo index cards. Sit in a circle. As the song plays, stand up and move around the circle when it is your index card's turn. For example, when the "Presto is Fast" melody is played, everyone holding a "Presto" card will stand up and jog around the circle, while singing. If there is time, repeat the activity, switching cards.
